There s no opening quote for this review I just couldn t find an appropriate one.I m going to start off my review with a standard disclaimer I liked this book I enjoyed it For an American Romance, it was probably the best that line has to offer However, it is not a five star romance not sure American Romance can fulfill my needs well enough to create a five star read for me, anyway I m going to complain about this book a lot in my review that doesn t mean I didn t enjoy it in general There s no opening quote for this review I just couldn t find an appropriate one.I m going to start off my review with a standard disclaimer I liked this book I enjoyed it For an American Romance, it was probably the best that line has to offer However, it is not a five star romance not sure American Romance can fulfill my needs well enough to create a five star read for me, anyway I m going to complain about this book a lot in my review that doesn t mean I didn t enjoy it in general I m a critical consumer Overall, I think this is a four star romance read.Let s start with the bad.DISGUSTING ANIMAL WOMAN COMPARISONSI can t blame anyone for not wanting to read this book Look at the disgusting description Harlequin provides Gentling horses is one thing Bringing a strong, independent woman like Emily to heel is something elseGross Disgusting I waited the whole book for it to get around to the misogynistic women need to be broken crap And Thacker did tease me with itAnd I don t tame women, either TAME Had he actually used the word TAME Excuse me she fumed, daring him to say that again The corners of his lips twitched in barely checked amusement Your family is right You are a woman in need of assistance when it comes to dealing with the opposite sex He paused, wearing a self assured, faintly baiting expression, then returned to the pen and the magnificent horse he d been training when she arrived He closed the gate behind him and let his glance drift lazily over Emily before deliberately meeting her eyes Luckily for both of us, darlin that schooling is NOT going to come from mepg 15 I kept waiting for this woman hating to start Dylan slipped outside the gate and came back with two apples He tossed them to Emily Reward her She did.Dylan returned Ginger to the paddock with Salt and Pepper, then strode back, praise in his eyes Now it s time for me to reward you, he said, flashing her a sexy grin.Emily knew what quickly sprang to HER mind, despite their new just friends status Afraid she would get herself in just as deep as she had the night before if she didn t watch it, she warned herself to slow down She put up a staying hand You really don t have to do that, Dylan Just being able to spend time with Ginger is thanks enough You don t want to owe anyone anything I don t want to be beholden to anyone, either He looked at her, his mind clearly made up So I m taking you to dinner as payment It s up to you to say when and wherepg 95See Nothing comes of this misogyny Thacker just likes to pretend like Dylan is disgusting inside, but he s not He actually ends up engaging in a lot of mensch behavior, which will be discussed later I m not sure if someone Harlequin told her this kind of thing was cute or what, but she doesn t go through with any of it Which is a huge relief to this reader I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop, it never dropped.EMILY S DESIRE TO CHANGE AND FIX MENThis is another thing that Thacker likes telling us about, but doesn t actually show us She s telling, not showing We are treated to constant talk of how Emily likes to change, shape, and improve the men she dates But she doesn t actually engage in this behavior on page in the novel We just get told it all the time Emily recalled with startling clarity why she d had such a hard time with her love life Part of it was her ability to see the potential in just about everyone The only problem was, most men did not want to be improved and certainly not by the woman they were dating So she constantly had to shelve her need to help The rest had to do with the fact that all the truly successful men she had met seemed to want a woman who d be content to tend to THEIR needs and live in their shadow Few wanted a woman who was already successful in her own right. pg 10This is a little muddled, though Emily mentions practices I hate trying to change a man s hair, clothes, job, and ambition But the book confuses this with changing Dylan s inability to commit, which is NOT the same as changing a man IMO Realizing you are in love and have met the woman you ll settle down with does not constitute a woman changing a man IMO After all, there was no point in pretending he would be willing to transform himself into what she wanted anythan she would be willing to convert into what he wanted. pg 59 She had to be logical, STOP trying to turn guys into all they could be, START accepting them for who and what they were And no matter how much it hurt, leave it at that. pg 138THESE TWO ARE FUCKING MORONSThe thrust of this book is that Emily asks Dylan to fake a relationship with her to get her pushy parents and brothers off of her back. The moron part comes in when Dylan and Emily decide to sleep together They are both to blame Dylan is to blame because he KNOWS what type of woman Emily is Emily might think she was a free spirit, but she was also vulnerable and traditional to the core A wild affair would never make her happy Nor would deceiving her loved ones. Not in the long term. And for some reason he couldn t figure, Dylan wanted to see the pretty brunette happypg 48When he take her to bed, he says ridiculous shit like,You ve got to promise me something, he whispered, as he took her to the very edge of the bed The need to make her his was stronger than ever No heartache No regrets Just pleasure, she whispered back, in the here and now She can t PROMISE not to have feelings for you You braindead idiot That s an IMPOSSIBLE request to make of someone Two, you just gave her an orgasm and are about to stick your dick in her This is NOT the time to bring this up Not the time She ll agree to anything at this point. Then, after sex, he s likeThis is going to be a problem, isn t it His husky voice sent shivers down her spine I don t know what you mean Her fingers trembled as much as her voice You re not the kind of woman who can get involved with someone or have an affair without asking them to commit to something for a lot longer term and to change into what you need them to bepg 79But you fucked her YOU FUCKED HER, you idiot No one was holding a gun to your head Why the fuck did you do that And DON T try to tell me bullshit about males having no self control I don t believe in that shit. She can t handle no strings sex Their night together was a mistake She tells him nosex Fine Then later, she throws herself at him again and he falls for it again What a fucking moronI can be with you without asking you to change just like you won t ask me to change She wound her arms about his neck and rose on tiptoe Let me prove it to you Dylan s jaw set I m not the kind of guy you need, Emily I never will be Emily ignored his quelling expression and instead focused on the pulse racing in his throat What I need is my freedom, Dylan, she stated stubbornly Just like you need yours Dylan s eyes shuttered to half mast Already, he was giving in Emily Luxuriating in his surrender, she pressed a finger to his lips No promises, Dylan No thinking about what tomorrow will bring Just this She kissed him, sweetly, tenderly You say that now, he protested against her mouth on a rough exhalation of breath. pg 154He KNOWS this is a bad idea, not even theoretically, but from EXPERIENCE, and he still does it MORON.Not that I m letting Emily off the hook Far from it, she is the worse offender She blatantly lies to him that she can handle no strings sex She can t and she knows it She LITERALLY throws herself at him, launches herself into his arms She then realizes she can t handle no strings sex and that having meaningless sex with him was a big, big mistake So she says, Nosex, but then later in the book, throws herself at him again IDIOT She is a liar and she keeps lying to herself and to Dylan This is manipulative and jerking him around She makes him think she can deal with what he s offering, then gets sad, sullen, moody, and depressed It s not his fault she s completely delusional Dylan thought she was a chicken That she d never be wild and reckless and yes COURAGEOUS enough to act on the needs of her body He was wrong And she was going to show him. There s nothing courageous about having a one night stand You re not chicken to only want to engage in loving sex with a committed partner Showing him by attempting, sadly, to have meaningless sex with him is stupid You will regret it and feel sad Determined to prove to him that she was as exciting and fiercely independent as he was, she held his eyes with the promise of hot, languid lovemaking to come. You should never have sex to prove something NEVER Odds were, VULNERABLE was not what Dylan wanted to see from her Hence, this was her chance to prove how detached she could be, too Adopting a studied, casual look, she extricated herself from his warm embrace, rose and began to dress. pg 79Sad and pathetic how she thinks she can handle this, but can t Unclear as to why she suddenly decided she can have one night stands, when she KNOWS she can t She misleads him and jerks him around She has sex with him then acts all cold and hurt It s stupid.BOOK TRIES TO MAKE THIS A RICH GIRL POOR BOY STORY AND FAILS MISERABLYHer family may be rich but she works and struggles like a normal person She s not spoiled or coddled He is not poor, he owns a ranch and tames mustangs He may not be as rich as her family, but he s not poor This is a terrible attempt at class differences TERRIBLE.THE GOODAMAZING CONVERSATIONS1So you admit you try and make over the guys you date he pressed Isn t that what love is supposed to be about Changing for the better because you re involved with your ideal mate Her lips looked so soft and inviting, he wondered what it would feel like to silence her with a kiss But he told himself to stay focused.Totally unnecessary and gross We could cut these two sentences outI thought relationships were supposed to be about NOT having to change Being adored for who and what you ALREADY were What s that saying He attempted to lighten the mood I love you just the way you are Emily scoffed It s a song lyric, not a saying And for the record she softened her tone wistfully I kind of like that you complete me thing He should have figured she would be a JERRY MAGUIRE fan Knowing that this had to be said if they were going to be friends, he pointed out sagely, If the man and the woman complete each other then that would imply they can t live without the other person So Lazily, Dylan tracked the way the breeze was ruffling her hair He reached over to tuck an errant strand behind her ear, then let his hand drop What kind of life would that be he asked unhappily If everything hinged on a person who might or might not live up to your expectationspg 57Great conversation, I am definitely on Dylan s side in this oneDo you want to discourage him, or not Emily heaved a disgruntled sigh and stretched her long shapely legs out in front of her She wiggled her toes and examined the pattern on her red cowgirl boots I do Dylan planted a hand on either side of him and leaned back to stretch the kinks out of his body, too Tilting his head toward Emily, he continued, Then you have to make the kid understand in every way possible there is no chance for him to edge his way in Emily twisted her lips and studied Dylan with narrowed eyes This is a competition, isn t it Actually, it was a hell of a lotthan that Although how to explainFinally, Dylan shrugged For him it is, maybe And for you she asked, nudging his thigh playfully with her knee.Dylan ignored the heat the brief touch generated With effort, he concentrated on the facts they could discuss As your pretend boyfriend, it s my job to protect you, Ms McCabe She wrinkled her nose at the unexpected formality And that s all there is she pressed, searching his face There s no ego involved Leave it to Emily to ask the really hard questions, Dylan thought moodily Of course there s ego involved He felt compelled to be honest I m a man, and you re allegedly with me How would it look if I let that little know it all continue to make your life a lot harder than it has to be right now Something shifted in Emily s eyes Her teeth raked her lower lip even as her voice betrayed little emotion So this is all about your manhood It s all about protecting you, Dylan thought, but he wasn t sure how she would take that I don t want to see you hurt I imagine none of your other friends or family do, either Again, something shifted It was almost as if a force field went up. pg 118REALLY LISTENS TO HER AND CARES FOR HERThis is the essence of romance Not the sex He takes a genuine interest in her life He sits down and listens when she talks SO HOT He enjoys spending time with her, even when sex is off the table Her problems are his problems Dylan grinned enthusiastically Maybe the two of them weren t meant to be lovers, but that didn t mean he didn t relish every second he spent with her. pg 117SLOWLY STARTS TO REALIZE HE MIGHT WANT MORE THAN JUST SEX WITH HERWell done.MENSCHDylan gets to showcase some mensch behaviorI think we should be friends, she told Dylan, when she showed up at his ranch that afternoon I thought we already were Or at least were on the way to becoming good friends What I mean is, Emily explained, aware her voice sounded a little rusty, and her emotions felt all out of whack, too, I don t think we should have sex again He teases her a little bit about how bad he must have been in bed Then,Okay Emily tore her gaze from his rock solid chest and abs She looked into his eyes, a little surprised that he hadn t argued with her She cleared her throat You re fine with this The tension between Dylan s shoulder blades eased You just told me no I respect that, and I will honor that His gaze gentling all the , he flashed her a crooked smile meant to conciliate He stepped closer and lifted a hand to her cheek, briefly touching the side of her face That doesn t mean I still don t want to have sex with you So, he said, and slanted her a telling look, if you change your mind and decide you would like to have sex with me again, it s up to you to let me know Emily wasn t used to guys being this reasonable Aware her face was still tingling from his brief, sensual touch, she drew a deep breath Okay, then Okay Another pause He scanned her Western wear clad form Did you want to help with the mustangs he asked finally, as cheerful as ever when it came to his work. pg 92Handles this like a man Mensch Gentle Doesn t cut her out of his life Still allows her to spend time with him and help with the mustangs Maintains the friendship Let s her know sex is on the table if she wants it again No pressure NOM Rarely do I see men like this in books or in real life SO many points. For being what my friends and I call Non Boyfriend, Dylan sure steps up to the plate and takes care of Emily Mmmmm Man He offers her protection from the Rival of the book, he helps her with her business He just fucking takes care of shit, like a man He s her Non Boyfriend, but he acts like a boyfriend She s fucking lucky. He takes care of her wounds at one point WITHOUT being sleazy or making a pass at her.He comes over to her and apologizes when he fucks up This is the sign of a true man Stands up, takes responsibility for what he s done, and apologizes to her for it Doesn t see apology as humiliating or weak.He shows mercy and compassion to Andrew the teenager who engages in reckless and criminal behavior At first, Emily thinks he is hardhearted to call the cops on the teen But Dylan knows that would be doing Andrew no favors to go easy on him He mercifully and compassionately allows Andrew to serve community service on his ranch Mercy Kindness Compassion Mensch.HOW S THE SEX, CARMEN Pretty damn good Thacker pushes the limits of what Harlequin allows in American Romance, and I m appreciative It s not explicit enough for my tastes, but probably the most explicit you can get away with in this line Dylan puts it down for her real good No wonder she wantsI can blame her for the first time they have sex, but after that of course she wantsof what he s got JFC It s hard to turn away from someone you know is this good in bed, no matter how bad you know it is for you The struggle is real I can relate. Also, he has the delightful habit of cooking her meals after fucking her A , extra points Damn Once he cooks her dinner after they have sex, and later he lets her wake up late and brings her breakfast in bed Major points Hot And it did seem like a miracle to be here with Dylan, at his ranch, after a wonderfully exciting and satisfying night of lovemaking AND have him bring her breakfast in bed How had she gotten so luckypg 183TL DR There is so muchI could say about this book But I ve run out of room I hope I ve given you a good idea of what s in here It s a good book probably the best Harlequin s American Romance line has to offer I was pleased Don t let my criticisms make you think I wasn t pleased, this was an enjoyable readROMANCE
