request was approvedMinor spoilers ahead Danny is a young widower struggling with the loss of his beloved wife in a car accident His son, Will, had been in the car when his mother was killed and hasn t spoken since. After Danny is fired and his landlord threatens to harm his most precious body parts because he s late with the rent, he purchases a gross panda suit and becomes a street performer to make ends meet. After rescuing his son from school bullies, Will begins to confide in his father, though he doesn t know this since Danny is dressed as a panda It doesn t take long for Danny to realize that even though his wife is gone, his son is still here and needs himthan ever. This is such a sweet, heartwarming tale it is sentimental without being sappy, funny without being corny and touching without being mushy.Sure, its got all the cliche stereotypes of a feel good movie kind, likable characters, quirky supporting characters and a happy ever after, but now is the time for such a book.Danny is a great guy he s struggling with the loss of his true love but he never gives up looking for a job, providing for his son, and doing what needs to be done. When he realizes the mistakes he s made with Will, that they should have been grieving together instead of alone and apart, he makes amends and takes the steps to repair his relationship with him.His friends, Ivan, a beast of a man with a penchant for baking, and Krystal, a pole dancer with a potty mouth that would make any sailor blush, are funny and good people, your typical unusual cast of friends that make this tale eveninteresting.I liked that Krystal became a friend, though reluctantly She s not a love interest, just a friend who tells it like it is.The writing is engaging, funny without being sarcastic, and yes, there is a happy ending, but there is death, sorrow, and bullying. But, the author tries to show that if you have a good support system, you can overcome obstacles that life throws at you because the people you love are never gone and life is worth living A year after the death of his wife, Danny and his son, Will are not coping with it well Will hasn t said a word since the accident, Danny lost his job and can t pay his rent Danny then becomes a dancing panda in the park Will doesn t know it s his dad he s sharing all the secrets of his soul with while Danny is just happy his son is speaking Delightful story I started this book feeling like 3.5 stars but theI got into the story the 4 stars started to appear, I had a hard time at the beginning of the story with all the chatting very big reef between them now Danny is ready to recover the lost time and finally become a friend to his son. Will doesn t like to talk, he prefers to live in his mind, afraid of life and bullies he just wants to spend time with his best friend Mo and forget about the past and all the burdens he keeps living he misses his mom so much, he misses his friend, someone to talk, someone to laugh and feel protected, it s up to life and circumstances to finally bring Will and Danny together.I laugh so much with many of the secondary characters and their shenanigans Katrina, Mo, Ivan all of them really brought so much to the story givingdepth to the main characters they really made me laugh so much What I like about the story was the Danny never gave up, that he kept working hard to give anything his son was missing, no matter if he had to work in a very weird job, his priority was to become friends and family all over again. What I disliked was the constant bullying to the Main characters, it made me angry and sad at the same time, that most of the people surrounding Danny and Will were people with the need to out them down.Bear Necessity is a story of friendship, love, empathy, and hope, a story of second chances Overall was a good story, a story that needs time to make you feel all the feels For a debut novel, Keeping Mum is absolutely amazing Such a truly wonderful story it had me hooked from the start Danny Malooley is a character that you will instantly fall in love with He s a hapless man, with his life practically falling around at his feet mother of his son When Liz died a part of Will died that day too At the centre of this story is a heartbreaking plotline A man has lost the love of his life A son has lost his mother Neither know how to deal with their grief, and this pushes them apart Will hasn t spoken since his mother died, and Danny has found this hard However, despite the heartache This story is uplifting and bloody hilarious I laughed so much at some of the scrapes Danny got himself into And, what made this bookcharming were the secondary characters that were involved in Danny and Will s life Ivan, Ivana and Yuri are amazing If there s ever people that you need in your life to pick you up and make you feel good, or just to be there to protect you It s Ivan and his family It may not be conventional their way of helping or imparting words of wisdom, but my word they were a light relief Even Reg and his sidekick Dent, who were terrorising poor Danny for rent money Cue the tying him up and threatening him with a claw hammer Sounds scary Yes But, the way Gould Bourn writes it just makes you smile There are times when you read a book you can just imagine how it would play out as a film I would love to see Keeping Mum on the big screen I d love to see the dancing panda get beat up by the Ukrainians I d love to see El Magnifico wearing his dressing gown I d love to see The Shark I could sit here all day and tell you about the scenes in this book that had me smiling and chuckling away to myself But, that would spoil the enjoyment for you Keeping Mum will have you smiling from ear to ear It s a book that will cheer you up no end I never thought a book about a father and son dealing with grief could be so charming, heartwarming, and laugh out loud funny Sometimes the Gould Bourn s characters teetered on the brink of being characters But, somehow it only served to make themreal and love able I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a lighthearted and uplifting read. This was a really unique, funny but also meaningful story which I want to read all over again Danny s son Will hasn t spoken ever since his mum died in a car accident Danny is also struggling to pay their rent and has just lost his job as a builder When he can t find another job it seems his only option is to join the street performers that he sees regularly in the park and so he becomes a dancing panda Will starts to befriend the panda unaware that it is in fact his Dad Danny, but he still This was a really unique, funny but also meaningful story which I want to read all over again Danny s son Will hasn t spoken ever since his mum died in a car accident Danny is also struggling to pay their rent and has just lost his job as a builder When he can t find another job it seems his only option is to join the street performers that he sees regularly in the park and so he becomes a dancing panda Will starts to befriend the panda unaware that it is in fact his Dad Danny, but he still refuses to talk to his Dad Will Danny be able to get their life back on track I adored the premise of this story what s not to love about a Dad dressed in a panda costume trying to make some money to look after his son There were some truly hilarious moments in the book and I loved that there were some really unusual and interesting characters Ivan from the building site and Krystal the pole dancer were brilliant and I totally didn t expect them But as well as being funny and light hearted, the story looks at some important issues and is ultimately a really moving book I would definitely recommend this to anyone, it will have you laughing and crying possibly both at the same time Thanks to Orion and Trapeze for a free copy of this book in exchange for a review It s out on Thursday 3 1 2 stars Danny has lost his wife and since her death, his son Will has lost his voice To make matters worse he owes people a bunch of money and he was just fired from his construction job So what is an unemployed single dad to do Buy a panda costume and become a street performer of course Being disguised in a panda suit has another important perk He is able to interact with his son and help him deal with his grief, without his son being aware of who he is talking to A light hearted look 3 1 2 stars Danny has lost his wife and since her death, his son Will has lost his voice To make matters worse he owes people a bunch of money and he was just fired from his construction job So what is an unemployed single dad to do Buy a panda costume and become a street performer of course Being disguised in a panda suit has another important perk He is able to interact with his son and help him deal with his grief, without his son being aware of who he is talking to A light hearted look at bad luck, grief and being a single parent that will make you smile Maybe being a dancing panda is Danny s destiny and in finding himself he can find the son he thought he lost My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy This book smells like it could be a new favourite of mine Thank you to Scribner for providing me with an arc.
