This is not a happy book So NOT a happy book Neither is it a romance Crown of Laurel is a straight out historical fiction along the lines of Katherine, Gone with the Wind, The Thorn Birds, The Mists of Avalon etc I know Mists isfantasy, but the messiness of life is all there.I am afraid that this is another book that my review will not do justice to, and it really deserves a read from fans of historical fiction, suspense, and family generational drama This story cover two generation This is not a happy book So NOT a happy book Neither is it a romance Crown of Laurel is a straight out historical fiction along the lines of Katherine, Gone with the Wind, The Thorn Birds, The Mists of Avalon etc I know Mists isfantasy, but the messiness of life is all there.I am afraid that this is another book that my review will not do justice to, and it really deserves a read from fans of historical fiction, suspense, and family generational drama This story cover two generations in Regency, post Napoleonic War England. The story starts with Laurel, the 16 year old daughter of the estate s housekeeper, who is in love with the lord s nephew, Harry Harry is not a hero although presents himself as one initially He has sex with the besotted Laurel, leaves for the war, and marries a blithering nightmare that he deserves He comes back to see Laurel and gets her pregnant while declaring romantic feelings then leaves again.Harry s uncle, the lord, marries Laurel as he needs an heir or so she s led to believe From this point on,than one character s world unravels in dramatic fashion over an eighteen year period. There is a parallel story with Daniel who met Laurel when she was very young, and their fates are entwined Don t be mistaken, there is no magic realism or fantasy going on view spoiler Harry is a coward in the war, and his uncle falsifies charges against a poor village man in order to protect the family name The man is sent to Australia for his supposed crime although he is really no threat Laurel finds out to her horror that the lord married her in order to prevent Harry from inheriting as he thinks Harry is responsible for his own son s death Harry, the pathetic man that he is, almost prays that his and Laurel son dies at birth so he can still inherit At this point, we aren t even at the 50% mark His own legal son is born the same night.Initially, Laurel s husband is an indulgent man, doting on his young wife His inability to have sex warps him, and in order to scintillate his sexual appetite he encourages her to flirt in the grossest possible way or she can t see her son She doesn t cross any lines with other men, but the whole setup reeks of evil hide spoiler This is multi generational story that starts with what should be an innocent love affair and through the betrayal and nefarious actions of almost all characters creates drama and trauma for innocent characters as well as the guilty True love comes to Laurel, but it s at a huge and devastating price inthan one area.I can not say that I enjoyed this book, but I could not put it down either It deserves its four stars as it is very well written and well plotted if not quite the enjoyable read I was hoping for The blurb is hysterically off base at it implies a light hearted Regency romp which is far from the truth view spoiler This book deals with infidelity, murder, deliberate betrayal as well as fate, greed, revenge, lust, incest, unrequited love hide spoiler Exhausting, but well done.I have to add onething The ending is heart breaking I was totally sucked in and did not expect it Damnation Can not stop thinking about it

I don t know quite what I thought of this book I thought it was very well written but heavy on the sex scenes I d picked it up because the cover looked like a Georgette Heyer book but it s certainly not a cheerful book like that The reality, however, makes sense families, war, inheritance always complex
